A clogged sewer is never fun, but finding out the reason your line is slower than normal may be more frustrating than the clog itself. To help you, we’ve identified three of the most common reasons your sewer may be held up.
1. Tree roots
As wonderful as trees are to look at and as important as they are to our environment, their roots can cause quite the stir. Roots are strong and sturdy, have an unpredictable growth pattern. Unlike your sewer line, they aren’t set a certain way. They stretch, twist and turn, sometimes running right into your sewer line’s path. Unfortunately, because they are so tough and always growing, roots will usually win the battle between them and your sewer lines, which can cause your lines to burst. The good news is that damaged sewer lines can be spotted and replaced.
2. Toilet
The spiraling, powerful toilet flush is good enough to get what’s intended for bathroom visits to where it needs to go. However, if materials like thick paper products, plastic, or nearly anything unnatural is sent down the drain, it may get lodged in your sewer line, halting the normal water flow. Putting anything down the toilet that shouldn’t be going to the sewer is dangerous and should be avoided.
3. Time
Sewer lines can last a long time, but never forever. The older your system is, the more likely chance you’ll run into consequences of old age, like cracks, corrosion, and other issues. Again, the good news is that faulty lines can be removed and replaced.
